A short trip to America!
Actually, a very short trip for Brick America - only down to the South West of England!
Earlier this year, we opened a custom exhibition for the American Museum. Located just outside of Bath, it celebrates Americana and opened to the public way back in 1961. To create a summer blockbuster exhibition for 2023, we were asked to re-imagine some American landmarks in bricks!
Taking bricks to Denmark - Medical build
Can we build a hospital that can be completely flat packed and transported to multiple events? Of course we can!
Merry Christmas!
and a happy holiday to you, whatever you celebrate at this time of year!
We’re closing down now, at the end of a very hectic year. So we’ll see you in 2023 and leave you with this picture. A few years back we were asked by LEGO (UK) to provide a Christmas tree for the Dream Toys event in London. Look who we bumped into!
Sweetgreen Commission
We don’t always build big things! I loved making this model. It was a surprise gift to one of the Sweetgreen Founders from his brother. A replica of their first location, on the corner of M and Bank in Washington DC, and standing outside, minifigure versions of the three Founders all smiles!
Exeter through the ages
They say ‘better late than never’ and in this case, it’s been two years! This summer, ‘Brick by Brick’ opens in Exeter - an exhibition literally years in the making!
Coming this summer… the history of Exeter in bricks
Whilst our touring exhibitions continue to travel around the world, sometimes we’re asked to do something a little more special. This one has been in the works since 2019!
Delayed from 2020 due to a certain virus that you might have heard of, Brick by Brick has been developed especially for the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. Within the exhibition, you’ll be able to chart the history of Exeter through nine special commissions. Here’s a sneak peak!
LEGO is Contagious - in a good way!
Sometimes we're approached with a request that isn't so much about the build - it's more about the photography of the final result. When we were asked to create a magazine cover we knew it would be the case this time!
Sugar Skull
I love working on projects that are a bit out of the ordinary, and this one definitely hit that mark. A friend asked if we could make a special present for his wife’s birthday. She loves Sugar Skulls and he was arranging various parts of her birthday celebrations around that theme.
I thought this was a really interesting idea, using a fun and colourful medium to represent the essence of sugar skulls as a joyful celebration of life and love.
Moxy Hotel, Slough
Sometimes a building’s designs lend themselves really well to being replicated in LEGO bricks. The cladding on the new Moxy Hotel in Slough is just such as building. I say ‘new’ and I really mean it. It was so new it was being built at the same time as we were building our replica of it! We were asked by the construction company - Morgan Sindall - to create a LEGO version of the hotel as their gift to the hotel management.
Who ya gonna call?
When there's something strange.... in your neighbour-Hub office... OK, I'll stop the ghostbusters puns now - but what if you do have something a bit unusual that you need help with? Especially if it's made of LEGO!
Around a month or so ago we got an unusual request from a usual customer. LEGO (UK) had a phone box in their central London office - but it needed to be on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Having been installed when the office opened, no-one knew who had built it, or how, or how on earth it could be removed. All they knew was that there was ‘some steel’ inside a ‘mainly unglued’ model. Well, we like a challenge!
Live-building a 6-metre-long Concorde!
Venues often commission us to build a model of local or topical importance to accompany their run of one of our touring exhibitions. The National Museum of Flight has an amazing collection of aircraft on display and they asked us if we could do a version of Concorde for them. Not one to shy away from a challenge we jumped at the chance to recreate the beautiful shape and lines!
Christmas in Cambridge
We had great fun collaborating with the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre in Cambridge to create a Christmas scene as part of this year’s festivities. And we are extremely happy with the finished results!
PK Porthcurno will re-open with a new LEGO model
For those paying close attention, this is why we were in the very south west of England a couple of weeks ago!
As part of their 150th anniversary, PK Porthcurno (previously the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum) commissioned us to create a model of the very first transatlantic cable to be brought into the beach.
For those that aren’t aware,
The Hamburg Süd Fleet
As part of their one-year anniversary celebrations for the merger of Maersk A/S and Hamburg Süd, Maersk commissioned a 1:200 scale model of one of Hamberg Süd’s CAP SAN fleet to be displayed at their Hamburg offices. This beautifully detailed model is presented in the official company colours in December 2018 and was a great success with the staff.
Brick Wonders is open at the Horniman Museum throughout the summer
The majority of our exhibition stay in a single venue for a few months, then they move on. Sometimes it’s much less - but sometimes it’s more. Especially when a large, busy, London museum needs a crowd pleaser for the summer!
Appleton Tower
If you live in Edinburgh, you’ll know of the Appleton Tower. As well as being housing some of Edinburgh Universities Students union and being the Edinburgh Fringe Hub - it’s also the home to the School of Infomatics. They’re a world leader in artificial intelligence, natural language processing and machine translation, and theoretical computer science……
The Steampunk Submarine
If you’re been in our studio over the last few months, then you’ll have seen something large, grey and scary coming together. Well, finally we can say what it is and where it’s going. LEGO House, meet a Steampunk Submarine!
Coventry Cathedral - 'Massive mini Churches project'
The other week saw the delivery of a bespoke LEGO model which will become a focal point of Coventry Cathedral centenary celebrations.
The opening of (a) Parliament
Pop quiz! What's the oldest continually running parliament in the world? Hint - it's not the UK but it is nearby....
Breaking Records with DFDS
This is probably our biggest, and most incredible build to date, and when we say big - we mean Guinness World Record breaking BIG! Built in collaboration with DFDS, the Danish Shipping Company, Jubilee Seaways is the world’s largest (supported) LEGO(R) ship. The ship was launched in Copenhagen on August 17, 2016. At 12.035m long, and built using over a million LEGO(R) bricks, she is a world record breaker!
